If I’m honest I don’t envisage a massive market in this book for vegetarians for fairly obvious reasons. And even though I’m partial to a cheese and onion pie, I would nearly always overlook it for a meatier option when selecting my prey.
So I’d say vegetarian pies make up no more than 5% of the book and even so, it’s more a case that it was a quirky meat-free flavour like a butter or macaroni pie rather than a dedicated veggie option.
I made a pilgrimage to the arty enclave of Hebden Bridge a couple of times in search of several other establishments but upon coming across Sakers organic bakery I had to give it a bash. Everything in Hebden is “organic”; it’s full of gift shops selling trinkets and baubles and is ridiculously avant garde situated as it is deep within the Pennines.
Nevertheless they have a fantastic range of bread and cakes and even sell (presumably) Quorn veggie sausage rolls along with pasties! Their pie flavours were cheese and onion, Mediterranean veg and Mexican chilli and cheese and it’s the latter in particular which tickles my fancy.
It’s a flat dish pie and is served excessively warm as the foil tray scalds my hand. The best compliment I can give it is that I didn’t even care that there was no meat in it, it was highly filling with an impressive kaleidoscope of colour to it and if I’m honest I’m such a big chilli fan I’d put it on my cornflakes.
