One hundred days of pie No.40 Dawsons Meat and Potato Pie

I feel duly obliged to do a piece on this one in my pie hall of fame. If you see the links on the right, you’ll notice it is the most read story on this here blog.

It wasn’t always – it seems to have rocketed up in the past few weeks to come from nowhere. Maybe the eighties teen heartthrob show “Dawsons Creek” has seen a resurgence in recent times? Maybe there’s an Irish ceilidh band called Dawsons whose own brand of craic is on the rise at feisty fun loving Irish Catholic get togethers? Or maybe Dawsons just make bloody brilliant pies. And they do. They really do.

They were one of the first pies I had to really blow me away. Based in the Manchester suburb of Tyldesley with shops in Atherton and Hindley they are indeed a craft baker who make heavenly pies of yesteryear.

The peppery kick and free flowing juices in both the meat and meat and potato may take some adjusting to if you’re unfamiliar. A spicy, messy, fiery affair with the meat pie in particular likely to result in hot molten jelly spitting out over you the second you tip the pie up to put it into your mouth.

An absolute gastronomic treat, and I have subsequently been back following completion of the book to inspect and check that it wasn’t a one off, and I’m delighted to report that it wasn’t (and I’ve ruined the sleeve of another jumper due to dripping juice)
