A Potted pie guide
The beauty of my extensive research (2012-present*) is that whenever I find myself in a foreign town, I always know where to sniff out the best pies.
(*though if truth be known, like most Wiganers, I have been sampling pies for as long as I cut my first teeth)
So it was that after finishing a 10k in Lancaster in a respectable 47.06m, I needed to rebuild my carbohydrate store.
What better place to go, than an old favourite in the form of Potts Pies of Lancaster, Morecambe and Carnforth?

Following yesterday’s post extolling the virtues of Galloways, I got a tweet off @IlfordDaveSCFC (married to a Wiganer @catalinar) who had excitedly spotted a box of Pooles meat and potato pies in the freezer aisle in Beckton Tesco’s. Thus making today’s pie of the day a shoe in.
Time for another pie of the day. I missed a couple of days and can only put this down to day job pressures, and “other” hobby pressures of trying to get a magazine ready for the new season.
I’d heard about the Killie Pie long before starting the book but I didn’t exactly know what was in it. If you’d ask me now I’d tell you that it’s purely a bloody good steak pie.
Seeing as they followed me on Twitter yesterday, it feels as apt a time as any to feature one of East Lancashire’s finest. Down the road in Accrington and Blackburn, you have the veritable pie twin giants of Hollands and Clayton Park but this small butchers’ in Burnley is more than a match for the pair of them.
Some days when I went out and ate several pies I started to wonder about the psychology of what I was doing and whether my scoring would be impacted by timing of the pie. Naturally if I’m planning to eat three or four pies in a day it makes sense to skip breakfast, therefore I end up so hungry that the first pie of the day will always feel fantastic as I’m starving.
LIFE OF PIES IS ON SALE NOW
LIFE OF PIES IS NOW ON SALE
There’s a Pieminster around the corner from my place of work. Add this to the Pie & Ale house on Lever Street and the Tib Street Tavern who sell fantastic Great North Pies and you’ve got a formidable triumvirate and there’s an argument to say the Northern Quarter should be renamed the Pie Quarter. Furthermore, the Crusty Cob is only a mile or so away, whose pies you can also find on here if you […]
The significance of the number 97 has nothing to do with quantity of pie consumption I’m afraid it is a simple tally as to how many advance copies of Life of Pies have been already pre-ordered by some wonderful people.
(With apologies to Prince*)
I am currently hurtling at great speed towards my 2014 ambition of publishing a third book, this one being about pies and presumably as you are reading this blog you may have a vague interest in it. I intend to update this site more frequently over the next few months both in terms of promoting this book, listing details for pre-orders and publishing content and snippets as an appetite whetter.
