The perfect gift for the pie lover in your life

2022-12-14T12:32:36+00:00December 14th, 2022|

It’s that time of year when I get a steady trickle of orders for Life of Pies. It is over 8 years old now but still garners a bit of attention, because there is nothing else like that out there, in book form at least.

You can pick up a copy for just £4.99 plus P&P, either for yourself or for someone who might appreciate it. It is a weighty affair with a good sprinkling of FULL COLOUR PIE PHOTOS in it.

All in all, it is over 380 pages and documents a light hearted journey around the country […]

One hundred days of Pie No.26 M.Newitts Steak Pie

2017-06-15T15:29:06+01:00August 17th, 2014|

newitts1The main premise behind the book was to seek out hidden treasures, yet if I’m honest, 80% of those treasures were probably found via the marvellous medium of Google. It would be completely impractical to set off in the car without a clue as to which place I was heading.

On the occasions where I just turned up somewhere on spec expecting to find a pie shop, I invariably ended up frustrated and disappointed. So, it’s […]

One hundred days of pie: No.22 The Killie Pie

2017-06-15T15:29:06+01:00August 9th, 2014|

killiepieI’d heard about the Killie Pie long before starting the book but I didn’t exactly know what was in it. If you’d ask me now I’d tell you that it’s purely a bloody good steak pie.

North of the Border they are partial to a Scotch pie generally filled with cheaper mincemeat or mutton, therefore a rich, chunky steak pie submerged in gravy is a joy to behold.

One hundred days of pie: No.19 The Crusty Pie Company

2017-06-15T15:29:05+01:00August 9th, 2014|

crusty1Bit of a daft name really isn’t? Surely by default a pie should have a crust otherwise it’s not a pie; nor is it crusty.

Anyway, sweeping aside that minor pedantry, if you head to Market Street in Manchester at the minute you’ll find a load of market stalls. It spread around our place like wildfire “THERE’S A POP UP PORK PIE STALL NEAR THE ARNDALE” and indeed there was. We don’t get this kind of […]

One hundred days of pie: No.17 Wienholts Steak Pie

2017-06-15T15:29:05+01:00August 7th, 2014|

wienholtspieWhoops I nearly missed a day again. Oh well, just time for me to revert to an old favourite I’ve previously blogged about on here.

I’d heard a rumour off one of the chaps on Twitter that they call their sausage rolls HAM ROLLS what with it being in the leafy footballer’s abode of Alderley Edge. Sure enough there they were on the shelves, along with a veritable cornucopia […]

One hundred days of pie: No.5 Pieminster Shamrock Pie

2017-06-15T15:29:03+01:00July 13th, 2014|

pieminster1There’s a Pieminster around the corner from my place of work. Add this to the Pie & Ale house on Lever Street and the Tib Street Tavern who sell fantastic Great North Pies and you’ve got a formidable triumvirate and there’s an argument to say the Northern Quarter should be renamed the Pie Quarter. Furthermore, the Crusty Cob is only a mile or so away, whose pies you can also find on here if you […]

One hundred days of pie: No.2 Deacons Game Pie

2017-06-15T15:29:03+01:00July 13th, 2014|

deacons1Good game! Good game! As a wig wearing light entertainment host might say. But what is good game. Indeed what is game? Why is it called game? It’s a bit of a silly name really isn’t it?

We don’t call fish “match” or poultry “competition” do we?

Five great pie blogs

2014-04-21T20:55:52+01:00April 21st, 2014|

paulsxmasI am currently hurtling at great speed towards my 2014 ambition of publishing a third book, this one  being about pies and presumably as you are reading this blog you may have a vague interest in it. I intend to update this site more frequently over the next few months both in terms of promoting this book, listing details for pre-orders and publishing content and snippets as an appetite whetter.

You CAN judge a book by it’s cover

2014-03-30T10:21:26+01:00March 30th, 2014|

pieminstershamrockYes, you can; because sometimes it’s perfectly self explanatory. I’ve spent several weeks poring over the various ideas, thoughts and combinations before getting to this stage and it’s safe to say that I’m delighted with the outcome.

There were funnier ideas and indeed more obscure or abstract ones but ultimately this cover reflects the nature of the mission down to a tee and spells out exactly what it does on the tin.

It’s a pie-athalon not a sprint

2013-08-21T16:43:16+01:00August 21st, 2013|

TanlanI started off so rigid and uncompromising. I would ONLY eat 200 pies, that they would be meat and potato pies ONLY, and ONLY purchased from local and independent bakers. The meat and potato fetish dried up as soon as I went south of Crewe and the more I travelled, the more discoveries I made which after living in Wigan for most of my 39 years I was blissfully unaware of.

Smile it’s a pie….from the […]

Wayne Rooney’s favourite pie shop?

2013-07-14T07:02:37+01:00July 14th, 2013|

Wienholt1WAYNE ROONEY RETURNS HOME INJURED FROM FAR EAST TOUR  scream the newspaper headlines. Poor lad. He probably fancies a pie right now. and I think I’ve found his local pie shop, that’s Wienholts in Alderley Edge, the place where Coleen and the other WAG’s get their steak bakes to go with their fake bakes.

I’m not saying it’s posh around here but I’ve heard off a mate that they call a sausage roll a HAM ROLL, so I am expecting […]
