BakewelllambpieAfter launching the Life of Pies twitter account just a week ago, it is indeed heartening to see that we have 105 followers already leaving us in no doubt that we are indeed a nation of pie aficionados.

Now I’d love to send each and every one of you a virtual pie but that would take a structured, disciplined plan delivered with military style efficiency but as I’ve had a lot of pastry this week I’m feeling a little bit lethargic. Plus it’d cost a few quid, even at Pound Bakery prices as well as distribution and storage costs. So sorry, you’ll have to buy your own pie.

In the meantime, I will share with you the 105th pie I sampled during the making of “Life of Pies”.

It was a Special Dales Lamb and Leek pie costing £2.25 purchased from the Bakewell Tart Shop situated in the picturesque Peak district town of the same name in Derbyshire. I also threw a dustbin lid sized Bakewell tart into my bag for good measure (£6.95).

Slightly pricey and no doubt pitched at docile, hungry walkers nevertheless this package veered towards the gourmet end of the market given the addition of mint and rosemary and it also had a cute little pastry flower on top of it. Always gets me that. You could serve up a turd on a stick but if someone’s bothered to put a decorative flower on top, then it somehow becomes delicious! Mmmmmm. A challenge to the tastebuds but overall I felt vindicated in turning down their award winning Steak & Ale pie to sample this product instead.

PS It’s gone up to 109 since I started typing this (Philip Bakers Pork Pie, Devon……)
