Two months to go….
It’s getting closer. It started with a pie, and a spreadsheet, nearly three years ago and the culmination of this madcap idea is getting ever closer to fruition.
“Life of Pies” will be released in just under two months’ time and the closer it gets the more nervous trepidation and excitement builds (for me at least!).
Following yesterday’s post extolling the virtues of Galloways, I got a tweet off @IlfordDaveSCFC (married to a Wiganer @catalinar) who had excitedly spotted a box of Pooles meat and potato pies in the freezer aisle in Beckton Tesco’s. Thus making today’s pie of the day a shoe in.
Time for another pie of the day. I missed a couple of days and can only put this down to day job pressures, and “other” hobby pressures of trying to get a magazine ready for the new season.
I went to Southport at the weekend. You might think that it’s more renowned for fish and chips and sticks of rock but there’s one or two pie purveyors of note if you know your stuff.
When I hear the words Rolling Pin they always conjure up images of angry mother in laws stomping down the street waving one about in the air or a dragged up Les Dawson wearing a hairnet. There’s probably some deep rooted psychological issue behind this though I imagine.
The following article appeared in the Wigan fanzine, The Mudhutter a few weeks ago and explains how the “Life of Pies” began and how the author hopes to use the latest craze of “Crowd Funding” to help fund the printing of the book.
I am currently hurtling at great speed towards my 2014 ambition of publishing a third book, this one being about pies and presumably as you are reading this blog you may have a vague interest in it. I intend to update this site more frequently over the next few months both in terms of promoting this book, listing details for pre-orders and publishing content and snippets as an appetite whetter.
It doesn’t sound right that does it? The humble meat and potato is the signature dish of the town of Wigan and is also prevalent in many Lancastrian towns stretching north as far as Morecambe and Barrow.
I got a tweet the other day about the Orrell Bakehouse in Wigan, a pie shop down a back street which made belting pies and is now sadly a pizza and kebab house. Like so many of the back street shops in WN5 or indeed any area it is no more. See the link at the bottom of this piece for a small photo and a bit of nostalgia
I’ve had to lay off the pies for a week or two for one reason or another before pushing on to the conclusion of Life of Pies in the early Autumn so I’ve been using my temporarily pastry free brain to get my records up to date.
