bluevinney1June 2012 saw your correspondent eat a very posh pie with a double digit price in an Oxfordshire village and then nipping to the even posher deli around the corner for a growler to polish off proceedings.

With a few days to spend in Dorset, I ventured all the way as far as Yeovil to buy a pie from a baker’s revelling in the deligthful name of The Dutch Oven.

The Bridport Gourmet Pork and Dorset Blue vinney cheese pie was a masterclass and made up for the fact that my trip to Weymouth was something of a disaster despite the adequate pie eating establishments in the vicinity.

All in all June I mustered a run rate rate of nearly a pie a day with 25 consumed in all, other highlights being a trio of Bells Scotch Pies, two lots of Cockney Pie and Mash including a stunner of a steak and kidney from the fabulous Windmill in Mayfair, a Venison and Burgundy from Harts of Cricklade. Not forgetting a trip to Wayne Rooney’s favourite pie shop (if it’s not, it should be) plus I had one of the best pies I had thus far and ever since from somewhere else. That one is for another blog on another day as I’m going back on a field trip to further assess it’s proficiency any day now….

Another Bridport Gourmet pie shot – a great summer snack!

An infamous and elusive Purbeck smokie. Can you tell what it is yet? (And don’t bother Googling…I’ve tried)

“Can I help you sir?” asked the Asda counter assistant

“The Bells, the Bells” I cried, trying desperately not to sound like a hunchbacked cathedral refugee

Sorry, it’s a Bells Scotch Pie

And finally, with the weight, size and density of your average shot putt but considerably better tasting, even geoff Capes would struggle to polish off this hefty Steak and Kidney from the splendid Windmill pie house in Central London….
